Spartan Workout Tour: Is it Worth Your Time?

For most of us, weekends are a precious commodity. We struggle and toil through the week, earning our daily bread and daydream about the coming relief and/or adventure awaiting us on the other side of our chosen occupation. Because of the limited time and space of a weekend, many diversions (and obligations) vie for our attention. One such event is the Spartan Workout Tour.

What It Is:

The workout tour is a free event hosted by the folks at Spartan Race and held in various locations all over the country. From the website:

Led by our SGX-certified coaches, the Workout Tour will benefit both the fitness rookie and the seasoned veterans. In addition to learning new training techniques while meeting new friends, you’ll also receive an exclusive “I’m Training for a Spartan Race” t-shirt.

By now my involvement in OCR means that my wardrobe is mostly comprised of race t-shirts and training clothes. It is also apparent that we OCR fanatics will do almost anything for the aforementioned t-shirt or a shiny new metal.

The Spartan Workout is a grueling two-hour training event hosted by an SGX-certified coach, which apparently is an euphemism for a staunch Spartan devotee who feeds off the pain and suffering of initiates training for their next or first Spartan race. What They Do:

There is music, there is pain, there are burpees. A lot of burpees.

Your SGX coach will lead your group through a variety of body weight exercises which will prepare you for a Spartan race. These are:

  • Push-ups
  • Isometric Pull ups
  • Air Squats
  • Lunges
  • Burpees

These five exercises are the core of the workout session, seasoned liberally at the discretion of your Spartan coach with running, bear crawls, planks, and other bits of fun. Be prepared for your legs to feel like cooked spaghetti noodles.

What You’ll Need:

  • A healthy dose of masochism
  • A towel
  • Water
  • A bag (to keep your gear and swag, provided you survive)
  • Signed waiver
  • Friends (sacrifices to the SGX coaches)

While there are staple routines for the tour, each location presents unique training opportunities, so be prepared for anything.

What You Get:

Your ass kicked, but in that parental “You’ll thank me when you’re older” kind of way. The swag fountain overfloweth as well, as most folks received a t-shirt (first come first serve, so get there early), stickers, race discount codes, a free race raffle, a post-workout snack, and a wrist band.

The two most important takeaways however, were perspective and new friendships. Each training tour offers a great deal of insight that will go a long way toward your race preparation at home. I also met some fantastic fellow athletes who readily shared their experience with races, battle scars, and a few tips. OCR truly has the best community of athletes.

Conclusion:

This is a quality, FREE 2-hour group workout session led by trained Spartan coaches. Every move is race-tailored to wrench you out of your comfort zone and get your ready for the next event. Depending on your location there may be some driving involved, but the trip is worth your time. I highly recommend these training sessions for anyone preparing for an OCR event, and so I give them five mud splats.
